The dosed show is the next night 6/8/69. They basically called in the B-team to play the second set. Listen to the eerie wavers in the vocals of the first set -- which is great, even so, though oddly truncated by Me & My Uncle -- they suddenly realized they'd better vamoose.

The LSD myth makes sense as all the songs overflow with a certain creative intensity that by '69 had worn thin. Certianly Dark Star is explodes with the most interesting musical adventures of any that i have heard and at this point, like many reviewers, I have heard most of them. Taking chances often pays off. It did here.

This is the show that Phil recalls in his book with the dosed apple juice backstage... additional stories can be found in Owsley's biography. A fascinating recording, not nearly their best, but immensely interesting.

Dupree's, Sittin', Cold Rain and Rag are the best ones ever.
Stephen>Eleven's of '69 are WAY up there in the annals and this one is no exception.

At ~3:40, at the end of the 3rd verse between when Jerry softly hits "..if you keep on Doin' That Rag" and the final "Wade in the water..." line you can hear a far off-mic (backstage?) "Come On" that is unquestionably Joplin.

A really fine show.

Some of the best live Aoxom0xoa performances they did. A great Eleven Jam.

And looking forward and looking back. Looking forward towards getting away from the focus on psychedelia of '67 and '68 to the new song-oriented Aoxomoxoa material, and a bit of Workingmans. But also back to some of the songs of '66: Sitting on Top of the World and Cold Rain and Snow. (Me and my Uncle is actually from '66 as well.)

TC on Keyboards. Pigpen is absent until the end. This is a very Jerry-focused show. And he's in fine form.

Classic early Dead---Janis and Pig Pen make it a truly rare jem---great early Dark Star---brings back the essence of the old saying "There is really 'NOTHING' like a Grateful Dead Show"---for those who have had the experience-no explanation is necessary---for those who have not-none is possible.

yes the Lovelight with Janis is legendary, but The Dark Star thur SoToTW portion of this show just BURNS with typical '69 fire and brimstone.

The DS in particular is very unique, someone else mentioned the weird energy in the beginning with the double stops; from there the jam just ebbs and flows intensely, building into a blinding crescendo just before the second verses. what an amazing version! you've gotta here it. the Eleven is also very hot, and the Sittin' is a candidate for a best-ever version; jer leads RAGE!!

don't forget the first ever dire wolf; a nice subdued acoustic performance very different from later versions...

i could go on all day about this one, just listen for Christ sakes!

J Straw from Topeka: I did go check out Dick's notes as you suggested. True, the notes describe what looks like the same songlist, they also place the venue as Carousel Ballroom. In addition, if you look at the URLs on that site for show notes, it uses the form "yearmonthday", i.e., 680607 as the file name for each image. And, in fact, the URL for that page IS 680607. And on June 7, 1968 they played Carousel Ballroom (though Deadbase shows only St. Stephen --> Darkstar as songs that were played). So, the date in the URL matches the venue that he lists, but while the song list looks like it might have been the 2nd set of the 69 show, it's far from complete.

I guess the bottom line is that Dick's site raises more questions than it answers. So, while I'd like to trust the guy just because of who he is, his site raises more questions than it answers.

Having said all that, the show seems excellent -- an old, late generation tape, and not nearly as crisp & present as many others of its vintage, but the playing and the presence of Janis make it a must-have, IMO.

Just to make things even murkier: David Dodd on his Annotated GD Lyrics page does offer 06/07/69 as the first known live performance of Dire Wolf. However, he lists California Hall in San Francisco as the venue.

I was at this concert about four rows back, and I remember it vividly. I was 17 at the time, and a big Dead fan. There was no advanced notice that Janis Joplin was going to perform that night, so when she stepped out from between the curtains behind the drums, that place went absolutely berserk! The few people who were still sitting on the floor were now on their feet. She stood to the left of Garcia, both enthusiastically charged for the occassion to do "Love Light" together. Sweating profusely two minutes into her performance, and wearing a pinkish outfit (CLEARLY sans bra), she was so animated that the Dead almost faded into the background. I've been looking for a chance to hear this clip for 37 years ... thanks for allowing me to re-live this wonderful concert. I believe I still have the handbill from this concert as well; I saved them ALL!
Two years after this performance, that wonderful voice was gone... followed by Pigpen's soon after.

Totally primative and raw. Full of energy that is absolutely classic. It is a huge shame that Janis was only recorded a few times live with the boys. What a great combination they make!

This is one of the "prettiest" (ya, I just said pretty) Dead shows ever! Seriously, Jerry sounds beautiful "tonight" (particularly in "Me and My Uncle"). "Lovelight," obviously, unbelievable!

This may have been close to the peak of Garcia's creativity, with little of the same old endless noodling and recycled riffage that was eventually to come. His playing is fresh, nimble, exploratory, and focused, and includes some cool messing around with guitar double-stops.

The interplay in the band is tight and they're all clearly listening hard to each other. The dynamics shift nicely and often. Though it's not at all spacey, it's as close as the Dead get to actual jazz without playing be-bop standards. A good, honest version.

The Lovelight of course is awesome (not only Janis but Jerry's soloing especially is as good ever), but this recording is really hissy. It's better than 2/2/69 for sure, but that's not saying much really. Me & My Uncle sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. Still, worth getting for historical value.

The highlight of this show is obviously Lovelight. Definately cool to hear Janis on here. Sound quality however is poor. Very hissy and no dynamic range at all. Still, that all we got, and that's better than nothing.

This is a five-star show, and the Lovelight with Janis is indeed stupendous.

HOWEVER, is disc 2 (Me & My Uncle and Lovelight) from a different source?!? Uncle sounds digi-staticy, and the lovelight sounds like a multiple generation analog source...

Anyone?

This is a great show and the best quality version I have come across ever. The show as a whole is great, but the Lovelight is truely memorable (even for those with memory trouble) as Janis Joplin joins the band at around 4:30 into the song. Definately get this show!!!
